Medical Insurance

Acupuncture is recognized by many major medical insurance carriers, including:

  • Aetna
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield
  • Cigna
  • ChoiceCare
  • First Choice Healthcare
  • Health Net
  • Horizon Healthcare
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Pacificare
  • Unicare
  • United Healthcare

Because California acupuncturists are considered primary care physicians, you may NOT need a referral from your doctor in order to start treatments, depending on your insurance coverage:

  • PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) Plans: you have the freedom to visit any provider that's right for you. You don't need to choose a primary care physician (PCP) and you don't need a referral to see an acupuncturist.
  • HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) Plans: you have to visit your selected primary care physician first to get a referral for acupuncture care.
  • POS (Point-of-Service) Plans: if your plan covers acupuncture, you can refer yourself to a provider outside the network. But, you will most likely have to pay a coinsurance.
  • EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) Plans: for acupuncture care, some EPO plans allow patients to see acupuncturist outside the network. Check with your insurance company for more information.

Many group plans offered through employment and some individual plans include acupuncture as a covered benefit. Your representative should be able to confirm your coverage. You may also call our Central San Diego office at 619.282.8068 or our Bonita (South Bay) office at 619.470.4714 to verify your coverage.

If your insurance company doesn't cover acupuncture, they may offer what's called an "affinity program". This is an arrangement that the insurance company has with certain acupuncturists to offer their members treatments at a discounted price (usually about 25% off the regular price).

In addition to traditional insurance, acupuncturists are also authorized to provide services under and in cases. If you have been hurt on the job or in another type of accident and you desire acupuncture treatment, call either office listed at the bottom of the page and make arrangements with us.

Acu-Care is a participating provider in many insurance networks, which either cover acupuncture or offer a discount off regular fees.
