Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Pollution, make-up and/or poor cleansing habits, which can block pores.
Use a gentle yet effective cleanser twice a day. Clean skin is the first step to beautiful skin!
  2. Overexposure to the sun. The sun provides us with warmth, energy and supplies us with Vitamin D, however, too much can be harmful.
Protect skin by using a sunblock with at least SPF 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Wear sunglasses, a hat and protective clothing when possible, and opt to sit in the shade during peak hours.
  3. Dry climates can make certain skin types thirsty.
Select the right moisturizer for your skin's needs. Treat your whole body, not just your face.
  4. Smoking, alcohol, drug use and caffeinated beverages (including soda and diet soda) affect the skin adversely in part because they cause dehydration.
Make mindful, healthy choices. Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum and try naturally decaffeinated teas and natural sodas and juices. Drink at least 6 to 8 glass of water everyday. Drug use should only be limited to what your medical doctor prescribes and occasional use of over-the-counter medications. Talk with your holistic health care provider to see if there are natural alternatives, which may help reduce your dependence on pharmaceutical drugs.
  5. Stress. It is important to incorporate relaxation strategies into your weekly routine.
Try yoga, meditation, breathing exercises and other methods of relaxation.
  6. Sleep deprivation. Sleep rejuvenates the body and the mind. Most of us don't get enough of it.
Make rest a priority. You should get at least 6 hours of restful sleep, but preferably 7 to 8 hours. Turn the TV off a 1/2 hour before bed. To help you sleep better try a warm, relaxing bath, reading something uplifting and inspirational, or listening to soothing, relaxing music.

Vibrational Beauty Therapy originated in the late 1990's when an acupuncturist in Florida was treating a female patient with Bell's Palsy (partial facial paralysis) using the Acutron Mentor Microcurrent device. The patient had sagging muscles and skin on the left side of her face. After the treatment, the client noticed a definite tightening of her face. After a few treatments on the affected side of her face, she asked the therapist to treat the other, healthy side of her face to see if her normal wrinkles could be reduced. In the end, the client was very satisfied with the results both for the Bell's Palsy and wrinkle reduction. This and many other clinical experiences, led to the development of the Vibrational Beauty Therapy system.

When Darren Starwynn, O.M.D., Dipl. Ac. and his research team started experimenting with the addition of colored light to VBT's protocol, they immediately noticed even greater effects on improving skin coloration, wrinkle reduction and muscle toning as well as many of the healing "side benefits" mentioned throughout this site. This led to the Vibrational Beauty Therapy system being later renamed Energy Light Rejuvenation (ELR). Now, it's known as Microlight Facial Rejuvenation.

Microlight facial rejuvenation is an effective, natural alternative to a surgical facelift. It involves the use of microcurrent stimulation combined with therapeutic colored light applied in a specific protocol which includes the use of acupuncture points on the face. This system was developed by Dr. Darren Starwynn, an acupuncturist and microcurrent researcher, and a team of health care and aesthetic professionals. It works in harmony with the body's natural energy systems. According to Dr. Starwynn, the lifting and rejuvenation effects take place through the adjustment of facial muscle tone, detoxification and cleansing of the skin, and stimulation of the acupuncture meridian system.

By combining specially selected colored lights to the correct acu-points on the face, the specific needs of each individual client are effectively addressed. The combination of microcurrent and colored light provides positive and lasting results. According to Dr. Starwynn, "Both microcucurrent and light help restore the energy circulation and communication within the cells of the body. The amount of aging we see in our faces is in direct proportion to the blockage and reduction of this energy communication in our bodies."

In short, the exclusive combination of microcurrent stimulation and Therapeutic Light and Color (TLC) re-educates facial muscles and addresses the underlying causes of visible aging. This unique, non-invasive, holistic system takes rejuvenation to the next level.

Microcurrent stimulation is also known as 'electro-medicine', and has been used safely and effectively for decades by medical professionals, including chiropractors, acupuncturists and physical therapists, to treat many different types of muscular-skeletal symptoms. Through these applications, the cosmetic benefits of microcurrent stimulation were discovered. Microcurrent stimulation is safe, non-invasive and works in harmony with the natural energy systems of the body. Microcurrent stimulation, when applied correctly, causes no discomfort, swelling or redness.

Low-frequency microcurrent works directly on the nerves and muscle fibers, in addition to improving blood circulation, collagen and elastin production.

In a 2003 study by Dr. Chai at the University of Washington Pathlogy Department, microcurrent stimulation, when applied to skin tissue, showed a:

  • 10% increase in the collagen thickness of the connective tissue;
  • 35% increase in the number of blood vessels;
  • 45% increase in the number of elastin fibers in the dermal layer; and
  • 35% increase in blood circulation in the tissue (circulation attributes to health, condition and color of skin).

Therapeutic Light and Color is what sets microlight facial rejuvenation apart from other microcurrent facial treatments. Colored light has reputedly been used for healing purposes since ancient Egypt and Greece, where sunlight, passed through prisms or colored gems, was applied to ailing patients. In modern times, light is used for therapeutic applications as diverse as cancer therapy, depression from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and facial rejuvenation.

Colored light works by enhancing subtle regulatory and cellular communication systems throughout the body. The specific effects of each color of light on the body have been documented by researchers such as Dinshah Ghadiali and Peter Mandel. Mandel uses the word "information" to describe the input of light on the body. In his view, external trauma, toxicity and psychological stresses of the past and present create "incoherent" information in our bodies. Giving appropriate colored light stimulation is a way to introduce pure information to restore coherence.

A typical facial rejuvenation session includes seven phases of treatment administered to a client relaxing in a recliner chair or treatment table. Treatment is administered with a microcurrent device and therapeutic colored light generator. In each phase of treatment, microcurrent and light are applied to different points and lines on the face in conjunction with skin care products designed specifically for use with microcurrent stimulation and TLC therapies. The skin care products which may be used include a cleanser, bio-electric gel, moisturizer and mud mask. A typical session, including all phases, lasts about an hour.

The microlight facial rejuvenation system enhances the skin's ability to heal and look more natural by:

  1. Increasing natural collagen and elastin production, which fills out hollows in the face.
  2. Improving blood circulation.
  3. Promoting lymphatic drainage and detoxification of the tissues of the face.
  4. Adjusting the tone of the facial muscles. When too flaccid, tone is increased. When too taut, muscle tone is relaxed.
  5. Activating and enhancing the subtle information communication systems of the cells and tissues. This is a prime effect of colored light when applied through acupuncture points. The gem essences contained within facial rejuvenation skin products also promote regeneration.
  6. Promoting circulation of bio-electricity through the tissues of the face, and connections to the rest of the body. This is the physical substrate of the meridian system described in the classics of Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is the art of unblocking and balancing bio-electricity (Qi) with needles.

Surgical face-lifts create more immediate effects, but microlight facial rejuvenation is much more beneficial to your overall well-being. Both systems can provide a satisfying lift and a more youthful appearance. A surgical face-lift, which involves cutting and stretching the skin of the face, is likely to erase deep wrinkles more rapidly than non-invasive techniques such as microlight facial rejuvenation. However, surgical face-lifts have several disadvantages. When the delicate muscles and fascia of the face are severed, scar tissue often forms and the subtle bio-electrical pathways (meridians) of the face may be disrupted. This can reduce the life-force, "energy," to the face, which in turn reduces collagen synthesis and speeds the aging process in the long run.

Other major disadvantages to a surgical face-lift includes the prohibitive cost and the risks it carries, which include:

  • Scarring, bleeding, bruising, infection and occasional nerve damage, which may lead to paralysis of facial muscles; and
  • Adverse reactions to use of antiseptics, anesthesia, antibiotics and other medications.

Botox™ injections work by partially paralyzing the nerves of the face, thus relaxing chronic muscle tension. This may reduce the appearance of wrinkles. However, severely reducing normal electro-physiology in this way may actually speed the aging process over time. In the long run, injections of this neuro-toxin may also have negative effects on the immune system and vitality.

Over a series of 8 to 12 treatments, microlight facial rejuvenation significantly reduces wrinkles and improves the texture, color and tonality of the skin. It also supports the overall well-being of the client. Microlight facial rejuvenation has no negative side effects when correctly applied. It is also significantly less costly than a surgical face-lift.

Yes, clients notice positive changes in their faces (and overall health and energy levels in many cases) right after the first session. However, one session is unlikely to have long lasting results. A series of sessions is required to re-educate the facial muscles and accomplish rejuvenation of the facial tissues and energy systems.

Many clients notice positive changes in their faces (and overall health and energy levels in many cases) right after the first session. However, one session is unlikely to have long lasting results. A series of sessions is required to re-educate the facial muscles and accomplish rejuvenation of the facial tissues and energy systems. However, if results are not seen by the fourth treatment, acupuncture body points may need to be added or an herbal supplement prescribed.

Each person is different, and your practitioner will assess your unique needs. For most clients, 10 sessions over a 5 to 7 week period will provide a gratifying, long-lasting effect. Ideal scheduling is 3 sessions the first week, 2 sessions each in the second and third weeks, and then 1 session a week for 3 to 4 weeks.

To maintain the full benefits, the client should receive a maintenance treatment every 4 to 8 weeks after completing the series. The frequency of maintenance sessions depends on age and skin condition.

Additional suggestions for maintenance:

  • Talk to your microlight facial rejuvenation provider about nutrition and exercise and discuss healthy lifestyle choices.

Healing "side benefits" reported by microlight facial rejuvenation clients include:

  • Relief of menstrual cramps
  • Menopausal discomfort alleviated
  • Weight loss (averaging 5-15 pounds over a series of 3-10 facial sessions)
  • Relief of back and neck pain
  • Depression or emotional malaise lifted, increase in mental clarity, increased feelings of inner calm and emotional centeredness
  • Relief of digestive discomfort and constipation
  • Writer's block removed, and increased creativity
  • Fatigue lifted, energy levels increased
  • Insomnia relieved, and
  • Hormonally-based acne cleared.

According to Darren Starwynn, OMD, Dipl. Ac., our faces reveal the health and balance of our internal organs, energy and blood. A person with a healthy, glowing face has good internal energy balance. Conversely, organic weaknesses and dysfunction show in the face through dark circles, pale or lusterless skin, blemishes, acne, excessive wrinkling, and other signs. This connection between our skin and internal organs has been referred to as the "viscerocutaneous reflex" by acupuncture researcher Felix Mann.1 He also describes how appropriate stimulation of acupuncture points on the skin surface can produce beneficial effects on the internal organs, glands, qi and blood.

Meridians are a subtle energy communication system that connects all parts of the body. The face has direct meridian connections to 8 of the major meridians of the body. Therefore, by subtle stimulation of the facial acupuncture points, microlight facial rejuvenation sessions are helping you to improve your overall health.
